After being a sleep expert for 8 years, and a parent for 15 years, I realized a lot of parents are simply not aware that their child is actually overtired and overstimulated.
That’s because when we are tired, we just want to go to bed and sleep it off to recharge but when our little ones are overtired, their bodies release stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline to help them fight their fatigue hence keeping them even more alert and awake.
Since our little ones can’t communicate with us how overtired they are, they can only vent out their frustration by wailing and crying and protesting. So some parents may see that as a sign that “Oh maybe they are just not tired and since they are fighting sleep – why not just let them play and let them tire themselves even more”
Now that’s a very common set of thinking but it’s also the kind of thinking that will only keep the vicious cycle of overtiredness ongoing.
My advice for you is that if you suspect your child is overtired, start to prioritise their sleep more and foster healthy sleep habits for them.
Your child doesn’t know what’s best for them. You do. And sleep is the foundation of our health and well-being. They need quality sleep to grow well, eat well and develop a strong mind.
If you have been struggling for the longest time and wondering what can you do to help you child and would like to find out more, book a discovery call with us and we can talk through your situation and suggest a personalised sleep solution for you. Because your family deserves the rest you all need to enjoy better quality of life. I want you to feel empowered and be a happy and confident parent.
