Whenever we go out for dinner as a family we don’t use our gadgets. I have noticed earlier on when my twins were just about 3 years old, it was becoming a bad habit because every time we sat down for a meal while waiting for the food to arrive, they would ask for our phones so that they can be entertained. After realizing the unhealthy lifestyle we were fostering, I decided to nip it in the bud and told them there would be no more gadgets whenever we go out for a meal. I told them that we should spend time together as a family, talking and getting to know each other better.
Fast forward to today – they are 12 and my younger two are 7 and 2. My twins no longer asked for gadgets and in fact now they would point out to us that other families are looking and playing their gadgets and not even looking and talking with one another. Now I think that’s just a sad sight, don’t you think? Whatever happened to the good old bonding time of just chit chatting and laughing together. That is what I called Quality Time.
I think as parents we need to set good examples to our children first before they can model our behavior. I know it’s tempting to use the gadgets as our electronic sitters while we do our adults’ stuff but we got to learn to cherish the time we spend together as a family. Because that’s what counts at the end of the day. Our family.
Let’s ditch the gadgets during meal times and start bonding again as family just like the good old days. If this post resonate with you, do post a pic of your family having meals together under these hashtags #familybondingtimewithoutgadgets #thegoodolddays
